General Comments About the Boat

Built for Challenger Syndicateships by Alexander Boat builders (10/6/4 steel plate) and with a Blue Haven Marine fit-out.

Entering from the semi-traditional stern, there is a fixed one-poster bed and a basin with mirror in the master cabin. An over-bed unit contains a radio and reading lights. A large illuminated hanging wardrobe also contains the Alde gas boiler. Storage under the bed contains a Dyson vacuum. An en-suite private pump-out toilet compartment is next, followed by a door to divide the boat at night.

Beyond this door is a wardrobe with hanging space and shelves, followed by the main bathroom containing a second pump-out toilet, sink unit and thermostatic shower.

Next is the decorated side-door and galley with eye-level gas double-oven, four-burner hob, sink, cupboards, worktops and microwave. Cupboards below the worktops are automatically illuminated. A lift-up flap can create a serving area for dining.

On from this is the dining area which can seat six and converts into a double bed.

Next is the lounge where the settee converts into another double bed. The two doubles are separated by a curtain. A solid-fuel Squirrel stove is in the forward corner of the cabin and a flat-screen TV, radio and DVD player are within the unit opposite. Behind this unit is a third illuminated hanging wardrobe.

The bow cratch contains the anchor, water hoses and has removable triangle boards for forward-facing windows. The whole cratch area has a removable cover for security and weather protection. A square table can be installed in the centre of the well deck eg for dining outside. In the bow locker are four 13Kg gas bottles in pairs for central heating and cooking.

There are radiators throughout the boat, and a powerful inverter provides 240 volts to several sockets.

The walls are covered in Murasuede which is bright but hard-wearing.

General comments by vendor

The syndicate works well together and we have been efficiently self-managed since 2014. A committee of four owners ensure day-to-day running of the boat and owners have a variety of other voluntary roles. A Syndicate Agreement sets out owner's responsibilities and an Owner's Manual describes every aspect of boat operation.

After a period onboard, most owners choose to perform simple maintenance tasks and cleaning for themselves but the owner can pay the marina to do this. Periodic engine maintenance is contracted-out.

Many improvements have been made over the years. A second complete external re-paint was completed in March 2018 by Oxon Boat Painters and she gets many compliments. Of the six traditionally decorated doors, four have been retained as painted by renowned narrow boat painter Ron Hough in 2008.

Other enhancements to the generous Challenger specification have been;

- new soft furnishings (2019). NB the photos with blue cushions and white curtains are new. Photos with red cushions and blue curtains are from the previous year.
- newly fitted re-manufactured Alde boiler (2019)
- a new cratch cover (2018)
- a new Squirrel solid fuel stove (2018)
- a weed hatch for the bow-thruster to enable maintenance whilst afloat
- a drinking water gauge
- LED lighting throughout
- a smart battery management system
- a thermostatic anti-frost heating system for unoccupied weeks in the winter
- sound-proofing to the engine space and a hospital silencer

There is a full inventory of bedding, cooking and all other on-board needs.

The AGM discusses financial, engineering and operational issues as well as the cruising base and draw of weeks for the coming year. We normally stay at a base for two or three years. Conqueror has circumnavigated the network since launch in 2002 and is in the process of going around again for the benefit of newer owners.

Currently Conqueror is on the Macclesfield canal within a day or two cruising of the spectacular Upper Peak Forest and Caldon canals. All owners pay £100 per month by standing order (Correct 2020). The only additional costs are diesel and pump-outs when onboard (gas is paid from syndicate funds).

All foreseeable running costs are included in the monthly charge which is reviewed annually at the AGM. The syndicate currently has sufficient surplus to cover unexpected major expenses such as major engine and/or gearbox failure and ongoing upgrades. No unexpected mid-year subsidy has ever been needed but this cannot be ruled out.
