AMETHYST sails the World Heritage Canal du Midi and all linked canals from near Bordeaux on the Atlantic to Agen, Toulouse, Carcassonne, Beziers, Narbonne, Montpellier and beyond on the Mediterranee. This will require co-operation with other owners and different change over places!
The canals are operated by the French VNF and all Owners are required to hold an International Certificate For Operators of Pleasure Craft from the RYA which can be obtained after a 1-2 day course at a local Marina at a cost of about £250 and £50 certificate cost for 5 years. The Canal closes for the Winter period 1st Nov to 15th March when the VNF do maintenance work on the canal system.
We have owned our share since 2006 and thoroughly enjoyed all our time in the group and on the canal. There are still 2 of the original members from 2003.
All canal locks are operated by VNF Lock-keepers or fully automated and electric operation.
We are a well organised Group formed in 2003 when AMETHYST was transported from the UK to the Canal du Midi. We have Chair, Treasurer, Engineer, Holiday Sec, etc and an AGM in January each year in Lancashire and we are always updating and improving the boat.
Amethyst is fully equipped with everything you need to enjoy the beautiful Canal du Midi and associated canals including lots of spares, chairs, 2 fold up bikes etc. The Canals and Languedoc region have great villages, canal side restaurants, vineyards etc..
Access to the area is by Ryanair flights into Carcassonne from 5 UK airports, Belgium, Ireland and Portugal plus the usual road and rail. There are other flights into nearby Toulouse and Beziers depending on changeover arrangements.
The boat carries 4 x 100amp leisure batteries, 1 Starter battery and Invertor allowing plenty of leisure power.
Dry docking is every 4 years ( due March 2019), Oil changes approx. every 150hrs and there are full service records and Log Books from 2003
To use a boat in France you need to get an ICC Certificate. Find out how to easily get one here
