General comments by vendor
A management committee, elected by and from the owners are responsible for ensuring that the boat is running to the highest standard.
We have owned our shares in Decize since 2015 and have spent wonderful holidays on her cruising the French canals, traveling as far south as Lyon and up through Paris the Champagne region.
Decize is a 12 share shared ownership Piper built in 2001 as a 52' Dutch Barge which is serviced each year during the winter months.
Each owner may arrange with other owners before and/or after them on the booking chart to do remote changeovers, this happens quite frequently. One simply negotiates with owners once the rota is finalized for the following year, usually in September/October.
Decize has a 62 h/p Beta Marine diesel and is relatively easy to handle but does not have a bow-thruster.
An International Certificate for Operator of a Pleasure Craft License or equivalent is required to drive her, but that may be attained after purchase via the Royal Yachting Association. It is very useful to hold a Maritime Radio Operator's Certificate of Competence for the VHF, although these days it is far easier to use phone communication with the locks.
When the owners took over management of Decize, a committee managing our boat was formed comprising of a Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary and Engineer. Since then costs have come down to £1,000 or often less.
The association has considerable reserves for maintenance, painting and holiday insurance. Annual expenses are agreed at our AGM which occurs in November/December in England.
There are no other costs save replenishment of your own consumables, for example, diesel and 5 Euro per week to cover cost of gas which is kept in a "Kitty" on board. Gas Bottles are replaced by the owner on board at the time a bottle runs empty. Locally based Boat Engineer is available for any problems encountered during boat usage. Free Parking is provided at the Marina in Auxerre and there is a large Leclerc Supermarket nearby.
