Booking system | A booking chart for the following calendar year is circulated in agreed priority order during the autumn and before the owners’ annual meeting in November, where the bookings for the next year are confirmed. Each owner has a priority for that year, and moves up a couple of places each year: after a year at the top of the list, the owner then starts at the bottom, and after six years the cycle begins again. Each owner can choose two weeks (separately or as a fortnight) in the ‘high season’ (April to October inclusive), and one week in the remainder of the year. By this route, thirty-six weeks are firmly booked before the year begins. The 4th weeks holiday is booked after the other weeks are agreed, b ut the list goes in reverse order. Weeks can be swapped by mutual agreement |
Priority for school holidays | Two owners have shares that have guaranteed school holidays |
General Comments About the Boat
The Semi-Trad stern allows space for at least two people to accompany the steerer (without needing to perch on the gunwales and hold on tight) and there is raised level seating on the port side, this being storage for the gas bottles and engine coolant header tank. For those who need to sit at the helm, there is room for a folding ‘bar’ type stool opposite the control lever.
The engine is below the rear deck, along with a horizontal calorifier situated on the port swim and battery banks on the starboard swim. There are four domestic and one starter battery.
You enter the galley through the hatch/doorway and down the steps.
Immediately on the left is an L-shaped worktop with a Vanette four ring hob in white, under worktop oven and a microwave oven at high level above. There is also stainless steel sink and long worktop length in this area.
There is a generous length of work surface with cupboards and fridge under and a wall cupboard above. Opposite the sink unit is a fold-down worktop, which provides even more workspace when required. The kitchen is well equipped with a full range of saucepans, utensils, cutlery and crockery.
Moving forwards again there are opening side doors and large hatch in the port side, where the doors fold flat against the cabin side so can be left open when cruising. There is a solid fuel Squirrel stove opposite, where it is ideally situated for heating the daytime living space.
The dinette table and seating is next. It can accommodate six utilising two stools and also converts to a ‘make-up’ double bed. There is locker space under the seating and a wall shelves above with inset reading lights underneath. There is also a second small table which can be used inseat of the larger "dining" one if required.
Through a door, the corridor towards the bow is on the port side, passing the bathroom. This has a wash basin with cupboard under, toilet and corner bath with shower over. There is a radiator, airing cupboard and shaver socket. It should be noted that the mirror over the bath has been replaced with a white melamine type arrangment,
Continuing along the corridor through another door, there is the main cabin with a full-length wardrobe, a cupboard housing the Alde central heating boiler, under-bed storage, high level cupboards and a radiator. The fixed double bed extends to king size utilising an extra cushion.
Through another door is the saloon with a full-length wardrobe immediately to starboard followed by a toilet and washbasin. There is a cupboard unit to starboard incorporating electric and aerial sockets with space for the TV, and then a fixed bench sofa/single bed either side of the central walkway. Both make full length berths, in one case utilising a lift-up flap and additional cushion. There is locker space under these benches and they can be combined to create a Super Kingsize double berth.
Beyond the benches is the front double glazed door and window unit, which has two doors and which will completely fold out when the weather permits. The well deck has storage lockers on each side which double as seats. There is a cratch and cover enclosing the well deck, which, unusually, has full headroom in the centre.

(The runing cost buget for 2019 is £14,400 which includes a contingency fee of £1,959.06 forward planing to cover cost of repainting and major repairs. £20 of the £100 (boat costs) we pay monthly is put in a different acount. The newest share holder told me that this forward planing was a factor in making their decision to choose Somnia.) |

General comments by vendor
We have an annual meeting with our management company, usually between October and Christmas. Recently these have been held at Ashton Marina just south of Birmingham. The schedule for the boat maintenance and budget for the following year are agreed. Whether the boat stays (sometimes if there are more than a couple of canals within reach of a particular marina) or moves on is voted upon and any other issues are discussed and agreed.
We have had our share for 10 years and have lovely memories of holidays with our grandchildren. There are some during school holidays not taken by special shares which we have been able to take without the additional cost of specials shares.
Once we bought out share in Somnia we have had no wish to go traveling by another means. Its so hassel free and relaxing, lots of fresh air and excerise.
