Kiewa is an extremely comfortable, semi-traditional style narrow boat which
was commissioned by The Boatshare Company. Since late 2006 the owners have
managed the boat themselves, with a committee appointed to act on decisions
made at an annual meeting or canvassed by email, and everyone keeps in touch
by email.
The boat was built by Halco Narrowboats Ltd on a Price Fallows hull. This
hull, which is made with a 10mm steel bottom, 6mm sides and 4mm roof, is
protected by fresh water magnesium anodes welded below the waterline. It is
insulated with spray foam to all surfaces except below the floor. The fresh
water tank is located immediately behind the bow, where there is also
storage space for two gas bottles. The interior is lined with a pale oak
panelling, which gives it a light airy feel.
Kiewa (an aboriginal word meaning 'sweet water') is fitted out to a high
standard. At the rear is a fixed full-length queen-size bed, extendable to
king size. The bathroom and galley separate this cabin from the living area.
The bathroom has a pump-out toilet, vanity and full-size shower cubicle. It
also houses a washing machine, which is powered by its own inverter.
The U-shaped galley is equipped with a microwave, an eye-level oven and
grill, and a 4-burner hob located above an electric-powered fridge; there is
a hatch opposite the sink area. Various cupboards and drawers provide good
storage and house a range of cooking pots and utensils, and a full set of
crockery, glassware and cutlery for six people.
Next to the galley is a raised dinette, which converts to a double bed. In
The lounge are two armchairs, each of which converts easily to a comfortable
single bed. On the shelf unit by the front glass-panelled doors is a TV/DVD
and a CD/ radio unit. There are also two folding chairs, for use on the
front deck or towpath.
Kiewa has full gas central heating and a solid fuel stove; hot water is
produced through a very effective calorifier. There is ample storage, either
in cupboards or under the dinette benches. Duvets and pillows are provided,
so each owner needs to supply only bed linen and duvet covers.
